Isometrics
are exercises in which there is no movement in the
joint angle or muscle length as isometric movements are
static as opposed to more traditional dynamic exercises
performed over a wider range of motion. Isometric
exercises can be either force applied against an immovable
object such as a wall or a static position with
resistance. While isometric training can enhance strength
at the specific angle in which an exercise is performed, the
benefit at greater ranges of motion is limited.
Isometrics are generally safer than other types of training,
require little equipment, can be done more
quickly and can be effective for muscle toning and
strength. Isometric training against an immovable object
quickly activates a larger portion of muscle fibers than the
first few reps of traditional multi-rep movements as close
to maximum force can be applied almost
instantaneously.
